According to the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), electronic waste is growing. Televisions are used on average for less than two years. For computers, it's three. As of January 1, 2012, The State of Illinois says you must "E-cycle" these and other electronic items to preserve landfill space and to ensure hazardous materials used to make electronics are properly disposed of. The Village of Riverside has set up a drop-off space for electronic items. Open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, residents can bring their items to the Public Works Building located at 3860 Columbus Boulevard. The list of electronic items which must now be recycled in Illinois follows: Televisions, Monitors, Printers, Computers (laptop, notebook, netbook, tablet), Electronic Keyboards, Facsimile Machines, Videocassette Recorders, Portable Digital Music Players, Digital Video Disc Players, Video Game Consoles, Small Scale Servers, Scanners, Electronic Mice, Digital Converter Boxes, Cable Receivers, Satellite Receivers, Digital Video Disc Recorders. Check the TIA website to see other “E-Cycling” spots.
