Meet Your Neighbor - Meet your Neighbor

Move over boys and girls, the new breed of scouts are going to the dogs.  That’s right; in 1995 “Dog Scouts of America (DSA)” was established.  They are non-profit organization of people who are dedicated to enriching their lives and the lives of others with dogs.

The DSA founder, Lonnie Olson, has devoted herself to bringing dogs and dog owners closer together.  Healthy, happy dogs make wonderful stable companions.

A new book, written by Kyra Sundance, a famous dog trainer, called “101 Ways to Do More with Your Dog” references many activities and instructions pulled from the Dog Scout website. The DSA Mission Statement reads:

1.        To promote, enhance and give recognition to the importance of the human/companion animal bond, through a variety of education activities and publications.
2.       Conduct research, education and service related to humane education and the human/companion animal bond.
3.       Encourage public education and community involvement on the part of its members.
4.       Support the involvement in the art, skill and discipline of animal behavior modification through operant conditioning and other non-traditional, non-punishment-based training methods, for the purpose of teaching various skills and activities to animals which will improve the quality of their lives and make them a more valuable resource to the community.

Literature is sent, meetings are held, camps are organized and activities are designed to further enhance the animal/human bond.  DSA provides the knowledge and opportunity for anyone who has a dog or wants to adopt one to become a more responsible owner.

Area resident, Alyce Cohen and her four-legged friend Fred recently organized Troop #210, which meets at The Urban Mutt, 3212 Grove Avenue in Berwyn on Sundays.  Currently there are six members in the troop with many interested parties still responding.

If you have an interest, comment or question you may contact Alyce by email at:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The organization does not discriminate against any dog.  To learn more about the organization go to Dog Scout Troop 210's website at:  http://dogscoutsofamericatroop210.webs.com/
