Per the Riverside Police Department, at approximately 6:40 p.m. yesterday, Friday, February 3, they received a complaint from a parent of a 12-year old female stating that she was followed home from school. The incident occurred well after school hours when two friends were in the school yard at Central and Hauser Schools. The children noticed a white van circling the area. After the two friends went their separate ways, one of the girls realized that she was being followed. The van followed her to her home on Northgate Court. At no time did the driver of the vehicle try to communicate with the youth or make any attempts to stop or detain her. Although the youth never observed the driver and was unable to give a description she described the van as: A white full size with rear door windows and none on the side. No plate registration was obtained. Per RPD Chief Tom Weitzel, they are "investigating this occurrence as a suspicious vehicle at this time and it appears that this incident is not related to the suspicious vehicle/van complaint in the area of Ames school.” The incident remains under investigation and the police are working with other agencies to see if there have been any similar issues reported. The police are requesting that parents and legal guardians review stranger danger safety issues with their children. If anyone sees anything suspicious or vehicles in the neighborhood that are unfamiliar, call the police immediately at (708) 447-2127 (non-emergency) and 911 for emergency. Note that license plate numbers are always helpful.
