The lights, known as In-Roadway Warning Lights, were installed in the pavement at Home, Gunderson and Lombard Avenues and are noted to be the first of their kind installed on an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) roadway. These energy efficient, solar-powered LED lights remain unlit and only begin flashing after activation by a pedestrian push-button to allow safe passage across the street. The lighted crosswalks came as part of the Streetscape Improvement Project along Roosevelt Road. Noting the high number of people crossing Roosevelt Road throughout the corridor between Harlem Avenue and Austin Boulevard, the Roosevelt Road Advisory Committee worked closely with Terra Engineering, Ltd., who designed the product, and IDOT to incorporate this safety enhancement into the design. In a press release issued by the Berwyn Development Corporation, Executive Director Anthony Griffin said, “The lighted crosswalks have been effective at reducing roadway incidents and are being used nationally with excellent results. They are a great addition to the corridor.”
